Is a Wonderful World

I’m very fond of these projects that consists in basically just being kind to others without expecting too much from it. We can see this initiative in examples like SpreadKindness.com, Operation Beautiful, PostSecret, You look great today and etc. Personally, when I think about the impact I would like to have with my thesis, I would love to know that I helped people to feel better about themselves and the world around them.

These are some questions that I might have:

- How stimulate people to experience the environment around them?
- How to lead people to interact with others?
- Can the digital media be used to explore the physical world?
- What is the boundary between intromission and persuasion?
- Can we raise emotions in people we are not related to?
- What an initiative should have to make people interact?

Thinking about it, I decided to use my first prototype to test if players would be interested in participating in a campaign that they would be randomly chosen.

1) I came with simple ten sentences for what you could call a joyful life (from hugging and being nice to others to searching for the beauty around you). I put all of them in a blog, relating each one with a picture

3 hugs per day

2) Then I wrote 20 postcards with these messages, with an envelope written nothing else than “MESSAGE FOR YOU”. Inside, there would be instructions about what to do. I just wanted to test if people that found them would connect to the blog and post where did they found that, so I could keep the track of where these cards have been. I know that participating is one of the hardest things in this kind of game.

3) So During this weekend I spread them all over Rio de Janeiro, expecting someone to comment or at least visit the website. But to be honest, the only two visits that I got were mine.

This experience made me raise more questions, like:

- What is the most effective way to reach people?
- How to lead strangers to fight/ support the same cause as you?
- What would be the right/ effective message?
- is it really true that these things only happen in movies? is it too naive to pursue something like that?

This animation is related to the Embedded Energy Calculator project and I did it as an attempt to help people visualize how much energy is used in our objects. I created the 3D with Google Sketch Up and animated with After Effects.

One of the things that I really liked to learn last semester was Flash. At the Web Media 1 we were more focused on the time line than the Action Script, which provides us with a good knowledge to develop websites. So I decided to put it in practice and try to create a website from scratch. Here are the screen shots of the development so far:

I also spent a lot of time this summer collaborating with a multidisciplinary group to develop an online application that can calculates how much energy is embedded in our everyday objects and also help designers in make the right choices while creating new outlets. We are now applying for grants and I was responsible for the visual of it.

I am also collaborating with Joe Laquinte to develop a digital game for a single player. It happens in space and it’s first goal is to explore the feeling of loneliness and the fragility of relationships.

This is the presentation with our first proposal:

And here you can find updates of the project:

This project was developed in our summer program in China. The goal was to help kids to learn how to behavior and react to an earthquake, as well as how to arrange their home safely. In order to achieve that, we created a 3D puzzle that can be customized into different rooms and kids can see where each object should be placed in practice.

This project was developed in our summer program at China, regarding kids at the Dandelion School. We wanted to help them assimilate the knowledge learned at their Finance Class and at the same time, learn a craft and keep a gift so they can use their apprentice in a practical way.
